In a historic vote on December 8th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the DREAM Act. Next in line to vote, the U.S. Senate chose to table the DREAM Act – a move that has bought us more time to secure the needed votes to pass the DREAM Act in the Senate before the lame duck session ends.
This situation has created an enormous amount of momentum. Knowing that this may be our last chance to pass the DREAM Act for at least a few more years, all activities are being focused on securing the needed votes for its passage in the Senate.
This spirit of urgency has catapulted Denver’s Jovenes Unidos youth members to create a DREAM Action Center where everyone can come and work to pressure members of the Senate to pass the DREAM Act this week.
“We are reaching out through radio interviews, phone calls, texting and social media to other youth, parents and the community to come to our office to phone bank targeted Senators and write letters to our Colorado Representatives who supported us,” explained Jovenes Unidos leader, Leidy Robledo who is coordinating the DREAM Action Center. “Our goal is to push them to vote ‘yes’ when the DREAM Act comes up for a vote this week.”
“The DREAM Act would legalize the status of thousands of undocumented students who could continue their education, become the professionals and community leaders they aspire to be and contribute to our economy,” stated Padres y Jovenes Unidos organizer, Julieta Quiñonez about the importance of this bill. “It is time for the Senate to do the right thing. Their vote will determine the future of thousands of students and their families – they need to rise above political lines and games.”
